On February 21, 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon arrived in China and was greeted by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. The gate to friendly exchanges between China and the United States was reopened.

The Sino-U.S. Joint Communiqué (also known as the Shanghai Communiqué) was released in Shanghai on February 28, 1972 during President Nixon's visit in China.
	China and the United States opened liaison offices in each other's capitals in May 1973. The Chinese Liaison Offi ce was first housed in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.
The Joint Communiqué of the People's Republic of China and the United States of America Concerning the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations was released on December 16, 1978. China and the United States officially established diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level on January 1, 1979.
	At the invitation of President Jimmy Carter, Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping paid an official goodwill visit to the United States from January 28 to February 4, 1979.

	The Chinese Embassy was inaugurated in March 1979. The chancery building at 2300 Connecticut Avenue, Washington, DC used to be the Windsor Hotel.
The August 17 Communiqué was jointly issued by  the governments of China and the United States on August 17, 1982. The three Joint Communiqués, i.e., the Shanghai Communiqué, the Joint Communiqué Concerning the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations and  the August 17 Communiqué, provide the guidelines for developing China-U.S. relations.
